LITIGATION LEGAL ASSISTANT
LOCATION: IOWA CITY, IA
FULL TIME: $20-$24/HOUR
Job Summary:
The Litigation Legal Assistant provides comprehensive support to attorneys involved in civil, criminal, or corporate litigation. They assist in case preparation, research, documentation, and communication to ensure the smooth progress of ongoing legal matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Case Preparation and Management:
- Organize and maintain case files, documents, and records.
- Assist attorneys with case strategy by gathering and reviewing relevant documents and evidence.
- Prepare discovery documents, subpoenas, and other legal forms.
- Manage deadlines for filing motions, pleadings, and other legal documents.
- Research and Documentation:
- Conduct legal research related to case law, statutes, regulations, and legal procedures.
- Prepare reports summarizing legal findings.
- Draft correspondence, legal documents, and pleadings for attorney review.
- Court and Client Communication:
- File documents with the court, ensuring they meet all procedural requirements.
- Communicate with clients, experts, witnesses, and opposing counsel to coordinate activities related to the case.
- Assist in scheduling depositions, hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings.
- Trial Preparation:
- Assist in preparing exhibits, witness lists, and trial binders for court appearances.
- Attend hearings, depositions, and trials to take notes and provide other support as needed.
- Administrative Support:
- Maintain and organize case calendars to ensure important dates (e.g., filing deadlines, court hearings) are met.
- Manage office supplies, mail, and other clerical tasks.
- Prepare invoices and track billable hours.
- Confidentiality and Compliance:
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive client and case information.
- Ensure compliance with legal ethics and company policies.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in legal studies, paralegal studies, or a related field is often required.
- Experience: Previous experience as a legal assistant or paralegal, preferably in litigation, is typically required.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of legal terminology, litigation processes, and court procedures.
- Proficiency with legal software (e.g., case management systems, document management tools).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal court rules and procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
