Position Summary
The Laser Operator is responsible for setting up, operating and maintaining precision laser cutting equipment (sheet & tube) to manufacture parts and components that meet exacting tolerances. This is a safety-sensitive manufacturing role within FarmTek’s production environment. The role includes machine setup, loading/unloading material, monitoring output quality, maintaining machine cleanliness and assisting with other related tasks as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a variety of manufacturing machine tools – primarily the sheet & tube laser equipment.
- Select the appropriate tools, machines, programs and materials needed for the job.
- Load sheets or tubes of metal into the laser using forklifts, hoists, vacuum lifts, or other relevant handling equipment.
- Unload cut parts, deburr/clean parts, inspect them to ensure they meet quality standards and specified tolerances.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and job orders to determine material thickness, part geometry, and machine setup.
- Use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, vernier) to confirm dimensions and tolerances.
- Perform daily machine cleaning, basic maintenance and housekeeping tasks to keep work area and equipment in safe, optimal condition.
- Adhere to all safety rules, including lock-out/tag-out procedures, and maintain compliance with OSHA or internal safety regulations.
- Communicate with supervisors/maintenance when equipment issues or non-conforming material is identified.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Weld Supervisor or Weld Shop Manager.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings/blueprints.
- Knowledge of measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
- Basic mathematical skills for dimension/tolerance calculations.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform manual tasks (loading/unloading material, etc).
- Experience in a manufacturing/fabrication environment (preference for CNC/laser operation).
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ year experience operating laser cutting machines (sheet or tube).
- Experience with CNC laser equipment (e.g., sheet, tube lasers) and setup thereof.
- Familiarity with multiple metal types (mild steel, stainless steel, etc) and their laser cutting behavior.
- Forklift/hoist experience and material handling skills.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, ability to work with minimal supervision.
